The present Technical Panel of experts on Biomass (including fuelwood and charcoal) for Africa was organized by the Economic Commission for Africa in Addis Ababa from 20 to 25 October 1980. The panel was held in conjunction with two other panels, on geothermal energy and hydropower respectively. Biomass was major and vital source of energy in Africa and had a pran1nent role to play within the over-all economic development of African countries. Energy was required in all sectors of the economy whether in the form of heat, steam, electricity, liquid transportation fuels or gaseous fuels or to produce petrochemical products.
