Report on progress made by West African states towards attainment of the sustainable development goals

Abstract

This report presents an analysis of the progress made by West African States towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) amidst significant challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic and geopolitical tensions. It highlights that, despite some improvements, the region is not on track to meet the 2030 Agenda, with only 3% of targets likely to be achieved and regression in 27% of them. Key issues identified include a substantial development financing gap, which has escalated from $2.5 trillion to $4 trillion annually, and the adverse impacts of food and energy crises. The report emphasizes the need for targeted policy interventions to enhance social protection, stimulate economic growth, and improve health outcomes, particularly for women and children. It calls for increased investment in agriculture to combat food insecurity, strategies to reduce maternal and child mortality, and comprehensive measures to address gender-based violence. The report concludes with recommendations for West African States to strengthen their commitment to the SDGs and improve their capacity for sustainable development.
