Economic relations between African countries and socialist countries of Eastern Europe in the past two and half decades, witnessed a steady increase assuming the increase in the number of concluded bilateral and multilateral agreements is one such measure. Trade relations between these two groups of countries on the other hand have not been commensurate with their economic potential. A recent joint study by the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) and the African Development Bank (ADR) and the Survey of Economic and Social Conditions in Africa by ECA gives information on the extent of Africa's economic performance between 1980 and 1985.
