The outstanding change in the world coffee market in recent years has been a sharp expansion in production since 1957, mainly as a result of heavy plantings which started in the earlier 1950's, Average world coffee output in the last three seasons (1959/60 - 1961/62) was as much as 70- percent higher than the average for 1952/3 - 1955/6 (see Table l). The crop in 1959/60, at over 4.6 million tons, was a record, and though production fell off in the following season, due mainly to the down-swing of the two-year cycle, another very high crop was harvested in 1961/62.
