Report on the progress made in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals in Africa

Abstract

This report examines the challenges and progress made in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Africa since the eighth session of the Statistical Commission for Africa in October 2022. It highlights significant advancements in 12 of the 17 Goals, while noting regressions in Goals 7, 8, 12, 13, and 15. The report emphasizes the urgent need for African governments to address data gaps and improve statistical capacities to track progress effectively. Despite some progress, the continent is at risk of not achieving any of the Goals by 2030 if current trends continue. The report outlines key challenges in data availability, disaggregation, stakeholder engagement, and financial support, while also presenting initiatives aimed at enhancing statistical capacity and monitoring. It concludes with recommendations for the Statistical Commission for Africa to strengthen national statistical systems and promote evidence-based policymaking to accelerate progress towards the SDGs.
