Abstract
The background report on climate action for the Africa Regional Forum on Sustainable Development highlights the existential threat posed by climate change to the continent's development aspirations, as outlined in Agenda 2063 and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. It emphasizes the urgent need for action under Sustainable Development Goal 13, which aims to combat climate change and its impacts. Despite Africa contributing only 4% of global greenhouse gas emissions, the continent is disproportionately affected by climate change, experiencing significant warming and extreme weather events. The report reviews progress towards achieving Goal 13, alongside other related goals, and identifies the challenges faced by African nations in implementing climate adaptation and mitigation strategies. It underscores the importance of innovative solutions, increased climate finance, and the need for a just transition to sustainable development that prioritizes the most vulnerable populations.
