Report of the Africa Working Group on Development Indicators

Abstract

The need for accurate and timely statistics for monitoring progress towards Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and other internationally agreed development initiatives has pressed the African countries to produce them at much more frequent intervals now than ever before. These recent efforts has also given African countries the opportunity to strengthen the capacity of their statistical system to deliver reliable and timely information for evidence-based policy and programme formulation and for monitoring progress towards development goals including the MDGs. There have been a number of efforts at the international, regional and national levels towards strengthening national statistical capacities in order to improve collection, compilation and dissemination of reliable and timely data on these indicators.
