Statement by Carlos Lopes UN Under-Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of ECA at the Africa Regional Conference on Population and Development Ministerial Segment. Africa is experiencing significant economic and social transformations that will impact on its future development prospects. Africa’s potential as a global growth pole is no longer a myth. The indicators are evident: while global growth declined by 2.7% in 2012, Africa grew at 5% and this trend is projected to continue with growth in 2013 estimated at 4.8% and to be further accelerated to 5.3% in 2014. Africa continues to discover vast mineral resource deposits in the mining, energy and industrial sectors with potential wealth that can be used for social development.
