Welcome Remarks by Mr. Abdalla Hamdok at the Opening Session of the Experts Segment, African Regional Conference on Population and Development. Mr. Hamdok, on his remarks highlighted that, We are gratified to see the high level of Government participation at this Conference, which underscores the great importance you attach to the ICPD Beyond 2014 Review. The continent has made significant strides in addressing population issues, persistent challenges remain and these must be tackled in a structural manner. These challenges include increasing inequalities amongst population groups. Closing the gender gap remains a major challenge, particularly in the areas of women’s economic empowerment and participation in politics and decision-making. The Regional Conference takes place at a critical moment, not only in the population and development debate, but also as the world looks towards the future global development agenda.
