Progress in the implementation of the priority areas of the Istanbul Programme of Action for the least Developed Countries for the Decade 2011–2020

Abstract

The present report reviews the performance of African least developed countries in the eight priority areas of the Istanbul Program of Action and assesses their prospects for graduation from the status of least developed countries. The 2018 report carries additional significance since it coincides with the 2018 triennial review of least developed countries, a process which assesses countries’ eligibility for inclusion in or graduation from the list of least developed countries. The Istanbul Program of Action recognizes that both least developed countries and their development partners must make particular efforts if those countries are to be able sustainably to transform their economies and, in time, transition to middle and high income status. It is important to note that, in addition to the Istanbul Program of Action, African least developed countries are also simultaneously implementing both the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and Agenda 2063.
