Africa regional overview of food security and nutrition: containing the damage of economic slowdown and downturns to food insecurity in Africa

Abstract

This report, which builds on the past two editions, explains that the worsening food security situation is due to climate shocks, conflict and economic slowdowns and downturns, sometimes overlapping. The analysis presented in this report shows that falling primary commodity prices and/or falling demand from key trading partners were the main causes for the economic slowdown and/or downturn experienced by many countries. The report also documents progress towards several key nutrition targets, which form part the sustainable development goals monitoring framework and the World Health assembly global nutrition targets.
