Les deux tiers environ de la population mondiale vivent dans les pays moins développés, et ne gagnent qu’un huitième du revenu mondial. Cette inégalité de revenu a augmenté et continue d’augmenter au fil des années. Au cours du siècle dernier de 1860 à 1960, le quart le plus riche de la population mondiale a accru sa part du revenu mondial de 58 à 72 pour cent alors que celle du quart le plus pauvre tombait de 12, 5 à 3 pour cent.
