A l'exception de quelques pays, la majorité des états africains contemporains a accédé à l'indépendance bien après la fin de la Seconde Guerre Mondiale. Comme en Amérique Latine au dix-neuvième siècle et en Asie dans la première moitié du vingtaine siècle essentiellement, l'indépendance formelle a été acquise par la voie de résistance au colonialisme. Ce processus, c'est-à dire le passage de l'état de colonie à l'état de nation indépendante, bien qu'ayant revêtu des aspects différents dans chaque région, présente cependant également des structures et des traits importants.
