Volta river project : a case study in financial analysis

Abstract

The Volta River Project is the biggest single investment undertaken by Ghana. During its construction the Government was spending something of the order of a third of the country’s public sector annual capital expenditure on the project. In physical terms, the project consists of a dam at Akosombo, 370 feet high from its foundation, 2,100 feet long at the crest behind which has arisen a 3,275 square mile lake, the largest in the world in surface area, with a volume of 120 millionacre ft. of water making it the 4th largest in volume after Kariba, Bratsk (USSR) and Aswan.
