Report of an ECA-MRAG mission to IFAD on rural development and poverty alleviation

Abstract

The president of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) requested the Economic Commission for Africa to contribute to the deliberations of sixteen session of the IFAD Governing Council which took place in Rome, Italy from the 22nd to 24th of January 1993. Special emphasis was placed on ECA’s review of its Special programme for Sub-Saharan African Countries Affected by Drought and Desertification (The Special Programme- SPA). The mission has some major activities like; to provide substantive inputs into the review process of IFAD’s special programme for Sub-saharan countries affected by drought and desertification; to prepare and discuss a project peroposal with the IFAD administration on the Fund’s request for ECA to organize a meeting of representatives of African First Ladies to accelerate the follow-up to the Geneva Summit for the Economic Advancement of Rural Women and to participate in the sixteenth session of the Governing council of IFAD including the preparation and presentation of a statement on behalf of the Executive Secretary of ECA to the council.
