Established as an autonomous institute under the legal framework of Makerere University in I July 1969, ISAE provides high level professional training for statisticians in the English. speaking African countries. The establishment was recommended by the then Secretary General of the United Nations (UN) and endorsed by the conference of African Statisticians held in Addis Ababa in 1967. Makerere University was recommended the station of the project and UN, designated as the co-operating agency. Since 1969, the institute has trained a total of over 1000 statisticians from 19 English-speaking African countries up graduate and postgraduate professional level. Enumerable workshops, courses and seminar since its inception have been organized and held in various subjects.
