Résumé
This issue of Gender net offers a comprehensive review of the progress made by African governments in fulfilling their commitments to gender equality as outlined in the Beijing Platform for Action (BPFA). It highlights key areas such as women's economic empowerment, poverty alleviation, human rights, and the rights of the girl-child. While these issues are not new, the discussion aims to sustain momentum and remind governments and NGOs of the ongoing importance of implementing BPFA commitments, which are foundational to achieving gender equality and women's empowerment. The significance of the BPFA was reaffirmed during the 49th session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) in March 2005, where governments acknowledged progress but also recognized persistent challenges. Governance initiatives like the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD) and its African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM), along with the African Governance Report (2005), have provided avenues for addressing gender equality concerns.
