Mission Report: population and sustainable development workshop for senior staff of the Zambia ministry of finance and economic development

Abstract

This workshop is about the interrelationships between population and sustainable development. Other sessions of the workshop have dealt at length with the definitions of population and development, and the focus this paper is to bring out the inter linkages between these two factors, environment and food security. The main objective of the workshop was to familiarize senior policy level staff of the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development with the interrelationships that exist among population, environment and development. The workshop observed that population and environment issues, despite being long recognized as important, have never been addressed in an integrated manner in national planning and policy formulation, mainly due to the traditional separations of knowledge by the various disciplines. The ECA was commended for spearheading efforts to bring about a shift in these sectoral approaches.
