Sustainable agriculture and environmental rehabilitation in Tigray : Design progress report of the headquarters and guest houses at Mikelle, Tigray Vol. XII

Abstract

This report outlines the architectural design for the Sustainable Agriculture & Environmental Rehabilitation in Tigray (SAERT) project, following a workshop in Mekelle (May 1994) that approved the draft proposal. Initially, an 8,320 sq. m. plot north of Mekelle was designated for the Head Office, Soil Laboratory, and Central Garage. Post-workshop consultations with the Tigray Regional Government led to relocating the SAERT Headquarters (including training facilities and Guest Houses) to Adi Haki, a developing urban center, while retaining the original site for supporting infrastructure. The design prioritizes functional efficiency and a pleasant work environment, featuring a central courtyard, colonnaded walkways, and shared facilities (lecture halls, auditorium, lounge, and library). Ten convertible guest villas accommodate visiting professionals. Structural, sanitary, and electrical designs are nearing completion, pending final site selection.
