This communication presents a comprehensive analysis of the African Association of Cartography's inquiry, concerning the standardization of specifications of African maps and the will expressed by many countries about the reinforcement of their cooperation as regard the production of malls A first effect resulting from this inquiry has been the ad hoc survey presented to an experts' group convened in Addis Ababa in November 1985, it is the item 5 of the agenda of the present Conference, It’s also shows the effort made by many countries ln the planning of rather ambitious national programmes and it gives a few clues about the necessity for a new approach of map making in Africa. Our association hopes that this document may be used as a working tool in the present Conference und that it will contribute to enrich our proceedings and state useful recommendation.
