Abstract
The ancient Egyptians conducted population census for administrative, political and social purposes, but the first population census of Egypt in the modern sense of the term was conducted in 1882 and the second in 1897. Thereafter a decennial census was regularly held up to 1947. The 1960 census is the first of a new series in the UAR. The Statistical Department had to consider the following questions before it decided to conduct the eighth population census during 1960: the availability of senior statisticians to take over the key posts in the census bureau, the time required for training field staff from inside and outside the Department, the implementation of the programme for the establishment regional statistical offices, the measures take to unify regional frontiers, the generalization of the identity card system and the time required for re-designing the census for and testing the various operations.
