This paper critically examines the socio-economic development of Ethiopia through the lens of information technology, highlighting the challenges and opportunities presented by the current communication infrastructure. With a population of over 54 million, predominantly rural, Ethiopia faces significant hurdles in its quest for development, including inadequate telecommunications and a lack of access to information. The paper discusses the existing telecommunications framework, the role of the Ethiopian Telecommunications Authority, and the potential for expanding internet connectivity through initiatives like the Pan African Development Information System (PADIS). It emphasizes the importance of human resources in information technology, the need for regulatory reforms, and the potential benefits of a national network for various sectors, including education, health, and disaster management. The conclusion underscores the urgency of establishing a national internet infrastructure to facilitate Ethiopia's integration into the global information economy, while also addressing the socio-economic needs of its populationen
