Draft Statement of H.E. Dr. Negasso Gidada, President of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia on the Occasion of the Inauguration of the United Nations Conference Centre in Addis Ababa. Dr. Negasso, on his remarks highlighted that the inauguration of the United Nations Conference Centre in Addis Ababa is being observed today, but it has been servicing as a venue important conferences for over a year now. This new Conference Centre an important contribution of the United Nations to Africa-- also marks a new chapter in the history of Addis Ababa. The location of the Centre will enable Addis Ababa to become an ideal venue for regional and international conferences. Both as a founding member of the United Nations and host country to the Economic Commission for Africa, the Ethiopian Government and people have a major stake in the future of the Centre, given its potential for economic benefit and many advantages it could present to organizations, businesses, and other potential users of such a facility. Ethiopia has tremendous natural resources for tourism and tourism-conference development, but it has not as yet properly exploited this sector due to lack of adequate basic infrastructures.
