The workshop was jointly organized by the International Centre for Economic Growth in collaboration with the African Capacity Building Foundation under the sponsorship of UNDP. Its primary objective was to bring together leaders of African research institutes to explore opportunities for collaboration with one another, and in so doing, enhance the impact of their research on development policy in Africa. In addition, the workshop also attempted to identify comparative and pan-African research topics which would be suitable for collaborative research and help strengthen Africa's voice on the World scene. The report of the workshop is attached. It summarizes the outcomes of the various sessions. It also includes the programme as well as the list of participants. The workshop also raised several questions which were not answered. These included: coordination mechanism for regional research activities; sustainable funding of research in Africa; role of government and private sector in financing research; funding of basic research.
