Some problems in cartographic toponomy

Abstract

Putting geographic names on maps poses a set of problems for the cartographer, The map reader or user has another set, and the toponymist doing scientific research on geographic names or helping to standardize them has still another set, All three sets are very much interrelated, and what is learned in reference to one should shed light on the others. While no one can predict precisely what will be said about the problems at that Conference, one can forecast with some confidence some of the topics that will come up that are of particular relevance to the cartographers set of problems.
