Since 1945 Statistical offices have been set up in the various African countries of the Community. These offices expanded regularly as the need - which soon became obvious - for statistical information increased and the necessary technical personnel could be trained. In view of the scanty facilities available during their first few years of existence these units were at first entrusted with the task of collecting data provided by various other Government agencies.
