Abstract
In the overall context of the African crisis and the United Nations Programme for African Economic Recovery and Development (UNPAASRD), the Department of Technical Co operation for Development has taken a number of steps to increase its assistance to African developing countries. The Department, which is the principal operational arm of the United Nations Secretariat, has incorporated efforts in all its fields of specialization. These include development planning, natural resources and energy, cartography, public works, statistics, population, public administration and finance, integrated rural development and other sectors. The increased emphasis on assistance to African countries has extended to the fields under consideration in this report, development planning, statistics and population.
