Within the last decade, despite attempts by some African countries to improve their civil registration/vital statistics (CR/VS) systems, financial, technical and administrative problems have continued to impede progress. Accordingly, in recent, years, there has been little change in the number of countries that have CR/VS systems, whose coverage of events is fairly complete. However a number of countries have been trying to improve, and/or expand their current systems by means of experimentation in limited areas and have achieved satisfactory process, in this narrow objective.
