Abstract
The first section of the paper is devoted to the chief demographic and socio-economic data which must under pin the planning exercise, and their various sources. The second section gives a number of examples of how these variables have been incorporated into overall and sectoral development policies and programmes. Finally, some conclusions are drawn as to the development and analysis of statistical information.
