The African Intergovernmental Meeting on Aspects of Applications of the Provisions of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea was held in Addis Ababa from 17 to 21 September 1984. The Meeting was opened by Prof. Adebayo Adedeji United Nations Under-Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa. The Convention which had already been signed by: 43 African countries give to Africa Coastal States a vast territory under national jurisdiction. It accords'-rights –to exercise sovereignty over a 12 mile territorial sea and 200 mil # Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) with respect; to natural resources and-certain' economic activities and a continental shelf for the purpose of exploring and exploiting it without prejudice to the legal status of the water or air Spate above. Land-locked states also enjoy some provisions with respect to the EEZ's fisheries, the revenue collected by coastal states from the exploitation of oil and other resources from the continental shelf and wit* respect to scientific research and fishing on the high seas.
