Situation of Food and Agriculture in Africa

Abstract

This report examines the food situation in Africa in recent years and the reasons for the deterioration in 1983, after showing signs of improvement in 1982. In this context the report also considers the outlook for 1984 and beyond. In the view of the report, the magnitude of the food problem is such that more concerted and integrated efforts are required at all levels - national, sub regional and regional — to permanently defuse the crisis. While taking note of collective and individual government efforts being made by African countries, it calls for much greater policy adjustments, priorities and stepped-up investments for reversing the unfavorable trends. Policy measures which could be directed to improving the African food and agricultural situation are considered.
