dc.description.abstractThe present study was undertaken as part of the ECA population division approved work program for the biennium 1992 to 1993 under 2(b) as one of non-recurrent publications: “alternatives to traditional approaches in the formulation and implementation of family planning programs in African countries”. This study is related to two previous publications by the secretariat namely: Guidelines on improving delivery of population and family planning programs in African countries, 1991; and strategies to improve contraceptive use to influence demographic trends in African countries, 1992. This study is in 5 sections including the introduction in section I. section II reviews available literature on traditional approached of birth spacing/family planning and their limitations. Section III deals with organized modern family programs as alternative to traditional approaches. Detailed discussion on ingredients of successful organized births spacing/family planning programs is presented in section IV. A summary and conclusion are in section V.en
