The paper deals on the need for concerted action to promote the advancement of women has been expressed by policy-making bodies of the United Nations for the past ten years. "In 1970, the General Assembly, by resolution 2716(XXV) invited all organs and agencies within the United Nations system to cooperate in achieving the objectives and targets enumerated in the Programme of Concerted International Action for the Advancement of Women. In 1975, the General Assembly reiterated this call for concerted action (resolution 3520 (XXX), and such action was further urged by the ECA Conference of Ministers held in Nairobi, February 1975 (resolution 269 xii). In 1977, United Nations agencies and organizations participating in the Regional Conference on Implementation of Plans of Action for Women and Development, held in Nouakchott, Mauritania, agreed that an interagency group at the Africa-regional level should be established for the purpose of coordinating activities for women in development in the Region. The Social Development Division of ECA, and the Training and Research Centre for Women, took the initiative in organizing the first United Nations regional inter agency meeting on women in development. This meeting was held in Addis Ababa 30-31 March 1978.
