Acute poverty, chronic food-insecurity and under-development generally spreading in rural Africa are rooted in low and declining outputs in the household farming sub-sector which produces the bulk of agricultural output. One of the principal physical constraints to increasing sub-sectoral land and labour productivity is lack of access to energy to be applied with selected technologies for supplementing the meager muscular energy of farming households and draught animals now performing all tasks in the agricultural production cycle only with traditional techniques.
