The initiation of the United Nations economic commission for Africa, five major trans-African highways, projects are currently in progress in the continent, namely: Trans-Saharan highway; Liombas-Lagos Trans-Africa highway; Dakar-Ndjamena Trans- Saharan highway; Lago-Nouakchott coastal highway; and Cairo-Gaborone Trans-East African Highway. These highway projects and their feeder links are expected, to stimulate economic activities in the region; provide cheap international links; assist with, the expansion of intra-African trade; promote tourism; generate employment and income not only through their construction and maintenance, work but also through the ancillary services created as result of their construction and develop better relations and economic co-operation among the countries concerned. The trans-African highways bureau within the ECA transport, communication and tourism division serves as a secretariat to the various coordinating committees and is responsible for organizing and serving meetings and for preparing the various studies required.
