Africa within the new world trade order

Abstract

The International Conference of the Uruguay Round and African economies was held in Tunis (Tunisia) from 24 to 27 October 1994. The Conference was opened by His Excellency Mr. Sadok Fayala Secretary of State, Ministry of Foreign Affairs. A statement was also made by His Excellency Mr. Layashi Yaker, United Nations under Secretary General and Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Africa. The Secretary of State noted that Tunisia took very seriously all the vital issues relevant to the continent. He referred to the repeated calls made by His Excellency Zine El Abidine Ben AH, President of the Republic of Tunisia and current Chairman of the Organization of African Unity, for a greater degree of integration of the continent of Africa into the world economy in order to ensure global development so as to benefit the peoples of Africa, In this context, during his speech to the current session of the United Nations General Assembly, President Zine El Abictine Ben Ali called upon developed countries and international financial and economic institutions to increase their help to African countries and, together, to find fresh and closer forms of mutually beneficial cooperation. Finally, he welcomed the many representatives of the international community to the conference, and expressed the hope that the meeting of experts would produce concrete results which would constitute a significant step for African development.
