The period 196S-1973 is now widely considered as the reference point of the world awakening to the seriousness of the problems of drought and desertification in Africa. During this period, the international community was aroused to the problems of drought and desertification by the severity of the five-year drought. The following Sahel countries were most affected: Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali Mauritania, Niger and Senegal.
