The present recommendations should,, like the 'previous ones, :have been submitted to a working group before being presented to the' Conference of African1 statisticians Unfortunately that was not possible, because the funds required to finance the meeting were not available Nevertheless, it is hoped that the tenth session of the Conference of African Statisticians will be able to devote sufficient tine to considering and adopting thee recommendations, which may be very. Useful for
the countries of the region which have already begun preparations for their censuses in the 1980 round. The present study is submitted in provisional form, since the ECA secretariat anticipates that improvements may be made to it so that it can serve as a reference document for African practice concerning population censuses. It must be recognized that considerable progress leas. Been made by the countries of the region this area, despite the multiplicity and variety of the problems identified.
