Given the current state of bio-medical science and the alarming rates of the HIV/AIDS pandemic in
sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), the only workable way of successfully managing the disease is through
prevention. Prevention includes educational and information strategies as well as appropriate behaviour
emanating from such knowledge. In contrast to other diseases such as malaria, which is spread by
intermediate vectors, or TB, spread by causal interpersonal contacts, a sexually transmitted disease
(STD) such as HIV/AIDS implies a voluntary activity subject to control by rational individuals.
