The Survey of Economic and Social Conditions in Africa, 1987-1988, has been prepared like its predecessors by the staff of the Socio-Economic Research and Planning Division of the Economic Commission for Africa. The work has involved missions to more than 20 African countries to collect up-to-date information on the economic situation in 1988 and the prospects for 1989, as well as the study of such information made available to ECA by the countries themselves or which can be obtained from other United Nations organizations. Various economic journals and the general press. The Survey follows a plan similar to the one adhered to in previous editions: the international economic situation and its repercussions on the African region; overall economic trends in developing Africa; the external sector; fiscal and monetary policies and prices; the main production sectors; developments in selected social sectors. This year a separate chapter deals with the issue of the social consequences of adjustment, an issue which is of increasing importance in the context of the economic reforms under way in most African countries.
