Review of Ethiopian HIV/AIDS research/studies/assessments and research gaps: ECA-UNDP Ethiopia country office SPPD Project HIV/AIDS and development (Part-1)

Abstract

HIV/AIDS is posing a major threat to Ethiopia's development, weakening human capital, discouraging investment, exacerbating poverty and inequality, and leaving the next generation increasingly vulnerable to its impact. Consequently, addressing this epidemic forcefully and quickly has become a precondition for all other development efforts for the country's success. There have been various initiatives undertaken at different levels for reducing the impact of HIV/AIDS. The purpose of this study is to compile a listing of research related to HIV/AIDS that have been undertaken in Ethiopia; and Identify the HIV/AIDS research gaps in the country. This study is organized in three sections. First it briefly presents the situation of HIV/AIDS in Ethiopia, its HIV/AIDS policy, strategic framework and project, and the supporting mechanism for coordinating HIV/AIDS-related research. This is followed by the review section, which summarizes the available literature on HIV/AIDS-related research in the country. And the last section identifies HIV/AIDS research gaps in Ethiopia.
