One of the major initiatives of the United Nations system in the
promotion of women's advancement has been the series of World
Conferences on Women ( from Mexico-1975 to Beijing- 1995), held
to build consensus on issues and constraints, the strategies and actions to be taken at local, national, regional and international levels. The Global (Beijing) and the African Regional ( Dakar) Platforms for Action provide a basis for mainstreaming gender in all development policies, programmes, structures and processes.
