Abstract
This background report highlights the role of emerging technologies in advancing energy security in Africa, emphasizing the continent's need to transition from traditional energy sources to sustainable alternatives. Currently, Africa's energy mix is heavily reliant on biomass and fossil fuels, with minimal change over the past three decades. In contrast, the report illustrates how other regions, like the United States, have successfully transitioned through various energy phases, creating opportunities for technological innovation and market expansion. The report identifies key emerging technologies, including solar photovoltaics, battery storage, and hydrogen, which present significant potential for Africa to leapfrog traditional energy revolutions. It underscores the importance of investing in clean energy to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals and highlights the need for Africa to develop skills, infrastructure, and strategic partnerships to harness these technologies effectively. The report concludes by advocating for a comprehensive approach to human capital development, research and development, and the establishment of a renewable energy technology roadmap to ensure Africa's active participation in the global energy market.
