Progress, challenges, opportunities and priority actions to accelerate the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 6

Abstract

This report assesses progress, challenges, and opportunities in achieving Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6—ensuring water and sanitation for all—in Africa, aligned with Agenda 2063. Despite advancements in access to water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH), disparities persist, with 839 million lacking basic hygiene services and 208 million practicing open defecation. Key challenges include economic water scarcity, inadequate financing, fragmented governance, and climate vulnerabilities. Opportunities lie in the UN-Water Global Acceleration Framework, transboundary cooperation, and innovations like the sanitation economy. Priority actions include quadrupling investments, enhancing data systems, and integrating climate resilience. Accelerated efforts are vital to meet 2030 targets amid population growth and urbanization.
