The African Continental Free Trade Area and Intellectual Property: Priorities, Recommendations, and Mechanisms to Ensure a Proper Agreement

This document explores the potential of intellectual property (IP) rights to drive economic growth and innovation in Africa, particularly within the framework of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). Highlighting the 2015 African Ministerial Conference and the 2018 AfCFTA agreement signed by 44 AU nations, it emphasizes IP's role in reducing barriers to commercialization and fostering investment. The AfCFTA, endorsed by 55 AU members, aims to enhance trade and economic integration, with IP development seen as a key catalyst for Africa's entrepreneurial and economic transformation.
