Gender in the Nationally Determined Contributions of African Countries: a way Forward for Effective Implementation of Adaptation and Mitigation strategies

Abstract

This paper analyzes gender strategies in Africa’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) to address climate change, focusing on women’s vulnerability in key sectors like water, energy, agriculture, and health. Over 85% of African NDCs reference gender, with West Africa leading at 41%. The study highlights women’s coping mechanisms, environmental knowledge, and the need for empowerment through education, training, and access to resources to reduce climate risks and enhance adaptation and mitigation efforts.
