This paper is prepared following the recommendations and the request of the first Intergovernmental meeting of experts on the establishment of Iron and Steel Industry in the Eastern and Southern African sub-region held in Addis Ababa, 25-29 May 1981. The report outlines the present status of iron and steel industry in Ethiopia the import structure of iron and steel products, raw material and energy resources and training capabilities related to iron and steel industry as well as development plan for the industry. Attempt is also made to indicate the possible areas of co-operation and collaboration between the countries of the subregion.
