Population and sustainable development with particular reference to linkages among environment, urbanization, and migration in ECA Member States

Abstract

The study has clearly demonstrated that throughout Africa environmental factors such as rural population pressure; drought; famine and desertification; insects, diseases and soil erosion; and natural disasters have been responsible for the numerous migrations and environmental refugeeism in the continent. This study on the linkages among population, development and environment has also revealed that on the other hand factors such as population concentration/urbanization; population redistribution/resettlement; refugee movements; pastoralism/nomadism and tourism all impact negatively on the environment.
