The fifth African regional conference on women was convened in Dakar, under the theme, "Action for Equality, Development and Peace". It was Africa's preparatory meeting for the fourth world conference on women to be convened in Beijing, China, in 1995. The objectives of the Dakar conference were to review and appraise progress made in the implementation of the Nairobi forward-looking strategies (NFLS) for the advancement of women; review progress in the implementation of the Abuja declaration on participatory development: The role of women in the 1990s; and generally take stock of the situation of women in Africa in the last ten years. Another important objective of the conference was to agree on a common African position on women and development which will represent Africa's contribution to the global platform of action that will be negotiated at the 1995 Beijing world conference on women. conference ended up adopting three main documents: The African platform for action, which is the main substantive output of the conference; a resolution on the implementation of the African platform for action, which assigns a major role to ECA in the implementation of the platform; and the final report of the fifth regional conference.
