Background paper on Sustainable Development Goal 1: end poverty in all its forms everywhere

Abstract

This background paper was prepared by the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), with contributions from the United Nations Development Programme and the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction. The paper focuses on Sustainable Development Goal 1 of the 2030 Agenda: “End poverty in all its forms everywhere”. Goal 1 sets out 7 targets and 14 indicators, and was adopted with a view to increasing human well-being. Poverty reduction is a theme addressed under several aspirations of Agenda 2063, including aspiration 1, a prosperous Africa based on inclusive growth and sustainable development of Africa 2063; and in particular Goal 1, a high standard of living, quality of life and well-being for all citizens; and Goal 4 on transformed economies and jobs
